Early Times Report

kathua, Jan 8: Frequent accidents fail to wake lethargic traffic police in district Kathua that restrict their responsibility till imposing challan and thereafter leave the violators for further mishap.
The incidents are occurring almost on daily basis but no permanent action has been taken by the department to control such incidents. The traffic police express interest in first week of the months and collect huge amount for the department but it is necessary to review the action that the department takes against violators.
The situation of heavy vehicles is not more praiseworthy where pressure horns, insufficient documents and overloading openly flourished but traffic police restrict its duty till imposing Challan and never takes initiative to control overloading in buses and mini- buses.
The buses plying towards mountainous destinations load double passengers than existing capacity which would cause a major incident and a great loss to the masses but traffic police staff deputed in Dayalachak and Lakhanpur do not take serious actions against drivers and owners of the buses.
High brass officers of the department should review the functioning of the deputed staff and seek current status of the documents of the buses. Merely imposing fine is not the solution of the problem and control over overloading and violation of traffic rules. The department should follow the violators even after imposing fine.
Avtar Singh, a local, said many incidents occur due to the negligence of the traffic police. He said everyone knows about overloading in the mini-buses towards adjoining villages but police do not take serious action against violators.
