Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 8: Amid Chilikalan chill, the flood victims in Srinagar have decided to stand on their own feet and begin reconstruction of their collapsed houses. After waiting for months flood victims have finally started reconstructing their houses in Jawahar Nagar, Raj Bagh and other areas of the city on their own. Construction is in full swing and almost every family is busy in some kind of construction here.
Victims blamed they waited with the hope that State Government will soon announce a package for them but that did not happened and after losing hopes they have now begun work on their own. Before September 6 when flood was yet to hit Srinagar city Manzoor Ahmad of Jawahar Nagar Srinagar was making calculations how much money he will need to perform his sisters' marriage. But currently he is much worried about the expenditure he will need to rebuild his house. Standing at the wreckage of his once three-storied house Manzoor said that they were first expecting that State Government will announce package for them, when that did not happened, then they pinned hopes on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he will announce package for them but he went back without announcing for them and their hopes vanished. "I was contended with the way things were going in my life. I had a full-fledged house. My business was also going good. Only responsibility on my shoulders was the marriage of my sister and I was sure to do it with the help of my savings only but now things have changed after flood. I will need money to build house first and then think of sisters' marriage," he said.
He said that Government gave them Rs 75000 to rebuild their house but it took them more than 50000 Rs just to clear the debris.
Another victim said that money was not enough even to clear the wreckage and to build house by this meager amount was equal to digging a well with a needle.
"Our house was worth at least Rs 70 lakh. What will I do with Rs 75,000 provided by the state government," said Abdul Raheem of Batamaloo Srinagar.
He said days in winter are bitter and it is difficult to live in a tent in this harsh season and that is why they got forced to start work amid winter in minus temperature.
The distressing impact of the recent floods in Jammu and Kashmir is undeniably manifold and lakhs of families who houses were collapsed in the deluge have to reconstruct everything, brick by brick. Ruling ministers have mentioned that no government in the world is responsible for fully rehabilitating the victims of the natural calamity and Rs 75000 was their primary responsibility and they have fulfilled it.
