Plays parting shot to pressurize PDP, BJP | Dejected Omar threatens to step down | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 8: After failing to strike a deal either with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) or Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the formation of next government in Jammu and Kashmir, the caretaker Chief Minister and working president of National Conference Omar Abdullah today threatened to step down saying that the state needed a full-time administrator to deal with the situation along the border with Pakistan and to mitigate the sufferings of flood hit people in JK. Soon after his return from London, Omar had taken to micro blogging site twitter on Wednesday and had ridiculed the PDP, which emerged as the single largest party by securing 28 seats in the recent elections, for talking about imposition of Governor's rule in the state and he reiterated that his party is ready to offer unconditional support to PDP. After PDP's cold response to his offer, the caretaker chief minister met the Governor N N Vohra in New Delhi and claimed that he has decided to step down. While pitching for 'full time administrator', Omar again took to twitter on Thursday and wrote: "Given the situation on the border with 10,000 displaced, the hardships of winter & the continuing need for relief for flood affected. I believe the interests of the state will only be served by a full time administrator & not a caretaker with no mandate to govern (sic)." An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Had Omar been serious about stepping down he would have not taken to twitter before announcing his decision. He could have tweeted after stepping down." He was of the opinion that Omar has played a parting shot by threatening to step down. "He (Omar) wants to pressurize both PDP and BJP with a last hope that talks between them would remain inconclusive and they start looking for options, including NC," the analyst claimed. In another tweet Omar said: "I had assumed govt formation would be a matter of a week or 10 days (sic). Today we seem even further away from that goal than we were 10 days ago." Omar said that if Governor Rule is imposed in the State, it is for PDP to explain to people. "It is now for the @jkpdp to explain to the people that with 28 MLAs & offers of support from 2 other parties why the state has central rule," he added. A political observer said when National Conference led by Dr Farooq Abdullah lost the elections in 2002, he (Dr Farooq) without waiting for a single day tendered his resignation and asked Governor to take the reins of the state. "Omar is very much attached to his chair and he is still dreaming big. It seems he is hoping that somehow his party sneaks in and he has say in the next government," the observer added. Pertinently, following the hung Assembly verdict on December 23 last year, Omar was asked to continue by Governor till the formation of new government. Omar's party faced defeat in the polls and got only 15 seats. While as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 28 seats and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 25 seats. The BJP and PDP have been talking to each other for the past 17 days, but both the parties have failed to break the ice so far. |
