Forest officers-Smugglers nexus in Chenab circle
Open loot of green gold in Keshwan range

Kishtwar, Jan 8: Loot of green gold in Keshwan Range of Kishtwar District falling under Doda forest Division of Chenab circle continues as trees including Deodar were found lying on ground inside compartment No. 2, 3, & 4 not only causing damage to the environment, but also to state exchequer.
While talking to "Early Times", the locals informed that Forest officials nexus with timber smugglers in a well planned manner cut the green trees and supply the timer to the influential persons and also to the people living in and around Kishtwar town.
The locals said that after cutting the green trees, the persons involved in looting of green gold put the tree trunk on fire which not only polluted the atmosphere, but also causes threat to the forest area which is undergoing drought this year due to less rainfall. The local inhabitants also raise questions on Forest Protection Forces over their failure in taking action and reporting the matter to higher authorities regarding the green felling.
"You can see forest fire all around at many place in vicinity of Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas--- this is all the handiwork of timber smugglers and forest department could not turn blind eye towards this" said State Secretary of Nationalist Communist Party (NCP) Ajaiz Naik while talking to "Early Times". He said that after public complaint, he personally visited the area and found the public concern regarding green felling in Keshwan range as true and genuine. He said that after visiting the Keshwan forest areas in compartment No. 2, 3 & 4, the green feeling claims of locals is evident on ground, added that accordingly the matter was brought into the notice of Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Doda.
He said that DFO Doda has been requested to conduct an inquiry through high level team into illegal & green felling in Keshwan range so that the guilty will be punished. He said that forest officials despite having knowledge about the ongoing green felling in the area are turning blind eye towards the issue that raises question on working on the officials responsible for checking such activities. He said that Kishtwar town is hardly at 1 to 2 KM distance from nearby forest area and demanded that government should declared whole District as one zone with uniform sale rates at various timbers deports established by the department at various places.
When contacted DFO Doda showed ignorance about having any such report of green felling in the area and said that department will look into the matter in case specific information will be delivered to them.
It is pertinent to mention that Forest officer-Smugglers nexus galore in many areas of Chenab circle spread over three Districts Viz Doda, Kishtwar & Ramban causing lot of damage to state exchequer, beside creating environmental hazards in the area.
