Forest deptt criticised for obstructing school construction | Students, parents hold protest, submit memorandum to naib-tehsildar | | MS Nazki Early Times Report MENDHAR, Jan 8: Nearly a hundred students, who were joined by their parents, today strongly criticised the forest department for obstructing the construction of a government school building at Simkan near Mankote here and held a protest against it. Government Middle School, Simkan, was set up in 1958. As the old building was not in good condition, two additional rooms were built there about four years back. One room is occupied by teachers while the other serves as classroom for over 200 students, according to official sources. Under SSA, three rooms and a verandah were sanctioned by the government over an year back. The contract worth Rs 10.14 lakh was allotted to a local contractor. Sources said while the contractor started raising the new block of three rooms and a verandah, forest department, which has its enclosure nearby, objected to it on the plea that the land belonged to it. The villagers said it was untrue as the school and its boundary wall were raised in 1958. "The new block is being raised inside the boundary wall and the forest department has no right to intervene and stop the construction," they asserted. They took the matter with the concerned forest range officer but when he did not allow the construction, they held a protest at Shaheedi Yadgaar here from 10 am to 1 pm and also raised slogans against the forest department. They were joined by the school students. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the naib-tehsildar who assured them to forward it to the concerned authorities. The protesters then dispersed peacefully. |
