Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 8: To jump into the electoral arena and try to come out victorious is the democratic right of any Indian. The Indian democratic system encourages all Indians to not only participate in electoral exercises in large numbers but also allows them to contest elections and play an important role in the nation-building processes. It is always expected that those seeking election will contest the same on issues of public import or on democratic and economic poll planks. Sadly, however, we have in our country politicians who could go to any extent or stoop low or even make common cause with the anti-national and pro-terrorist forces to achieve their petty political goals or win an election. They do so in the name of "secularism". What happened during the just-held Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu & Kashmir or what the Congress did on February 6 and 7 to win a seat constitutes a glaring example in this regard. The case in point is the deplorable U-turn taken by the Congress to get the support of independent MLA from Langate Er Rashid, who is known for his anti-national and pro-terrorist and pro-Pakistan views.
What did the Congress do to get the vote of Er Rashid? Rashid had laid down a condition that he would vote for the Congress candidate only if the Congress, which was at the helm of affairs in Delhi when terrorist Afzal Guru was hanged within the premises of Tihar Jail in Delhi, offered an unconditional apology for not allowing him to meet his family members. Afzal Guru was convicted in the 2001 Parliament terrorist attack case after a very lengthy trial. The Congress stooped so low that it offered an apology a revelation to which effect was made by none other than Er Rashid himself. "The Congress MLAs have apologized, saying that not allowing Afzal's family to meet him was a mistake and the demand for return of his mortal remains was a humanitarian issue," he said, and added that it was the demand of every Kashmiri and apology of Congress legislators is their victory". "The admission of guilt by Congress legislators was a victory of the people of Kashmir," the jubilant Rashid also said while talking to reporters.
Not one but five Congress MLAs tendered an apology on behalf of the Congress party and the Congress candidate to obtain one vote needed to win the election. They were G M Saroori, Vikar Rasool, Haji Rashid, Muhammad Amin Bhat and Gulzar Wani. They, inter-alia, said in a signed statement that "they support MLA Engineer Rashid's demands, including his demand for return of the mortal remains of Afzal to his family".
The Congress candidate did win the election but in the process the Congress party lost all of its credibility in the eyes of the people. What surprised and shocked the ardent believers in the democratic system and critics of terrorists, extremists and Pakistan all the more was the statement of the Congress candidate that his victory was a victory of secularism and defeat of communal forces. It must remain a matter of shame for the Congress party. There is no doubt that the Congress will pay a very heavy price in the days to come for the kind of politics it indulged in to win just one Rajya Sabha seat.
