Omar draws pleasure from Azad's victory, forgets his own party | Some NC leaders upset with Omar's policy | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 8: National Conference Working President, Omar Abdullah may be elated over the victory of Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad in the Rajya Sabha elections, but the truth of matter is that Omar should be worried over the future of his party in the state which is on verge of being 'decimated' in the state Probably for the first time in the history of state there is nobody from the National Conference to represent the party in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. At the same time the party was relegated to the third spot in the assembly elections held in the state last year in November and December. Still then Omar draws solace from Azad's win despite he and his father were termed as 'incompetent' and 'inefficient' by Azad during the assembly elections campaign. National Conference, the oldest mainstream party of Jammu & Kashmir is fast losing its base across the state with people getting fed up of the policies and programmes being adopted by the party and its leadership. From Karnah to Lakhanpur people are no more ready to buy the slogans of National Conference and as such the party continues to suffer. Sources told Early Times that some of the leaders of National Conference are upset with the NC working President for his decision to support Azad for his re-entry in to the Rajya Sabha. These leaders said that instead of galvanizing support for his own men, Omar chose to support Azad so that he gets elected to Rajya Sabha. "Some of the party leaders are quite disappointed with the fact that nobody from National Conference has been elected to Rajya Sabha, house of elders. These people believe that there are veterans who could have been easily nominated for the Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu & Kashmir," said sources. Sources said that the 'disgruntled' NC leaders say that if the party could galvanize support of its own men and others for the victory of Azad then there was no reason for the party candidates to win the Rajya Sabha elections if they were asked to fight the elections for the seats of the upper house of the parliament. Pertinently, NC lost all the Lok Sabha seats from the three seats which they contested from the Kashmir valley last year. Party President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah lost the Srinagar-Budgam-Ganderbal Lok Sabha seat against Tariq Hameed Karra of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The party also lost the South and North Kashmir Lok Sabha seat at the hands of PDP candidates. In the Rajya Sabha elections held on February 7, NC candidates Nasir Aslam Wani and Sajad Ahmad Kitchloo lost against the PDP and Bharatiya Janta Party candidates. While PDP got two seats, BJP and Congress managed to win one Rajya Sabha seat from the state. National Conference could not win any seat and as such none among them could be elected to the Rajya Sabha. |
