Of junior Doctors' arrogant insensitivity and rising public ire | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 8: Repeated incidents of violent clashes between junior doctors who man emergency services in Government Medical College Hospital and the attendants of the patients are being attributed to arrogance and insensitivity of these doctors coupled with laxity on part of the administration that has got coerced by their arm twisting tactics rather than holding these doctors accountable for their behaviour. After subjecting hundreds of patient to untold miseries after these doctors shunned work following an altercation by an attendant last week, the junior doctors were just persuaded to resume their duties when they picked up the brawl again, this time with a local BJP leader, who had brought his ailing wife to the hospital. Vikram Randhawa, the attendant alleged that junior doctors ganged up against him after he raised his voice against utter insensitivity and arrogance of the doctor on duty. "I was advised by a senior doctor to take my wife to the Emergency as she had chronic chest infection and was panting for breath, but after waiting for over half an hour, the doctor on duty behaved with utter insensitivity and arrogance" he alleged. "Within no time, the other doctors ganged up with their odious colleague and threatened me" he added. He also alleged that Police who reached on the spot were also extremely biased and unreasonable and did not take cognizance of his repeated appeals that the doctor on duty had misbehaved with him and his wife. After an FIR was registered against Randhawa at Police Station Bakshinagar, leaders of state BJP took a strong exception to the treatment meted out to poor patients and their attendants at the GMC. They registered a strong protest against the incident involving Randhwa and his family and biased behaviour of the Police. Later, they got a counter FIR registered against the doctors who had misbehaved and threatened him the previous night. The incident however is a reflection on much more than merely the conceit of the junior doctors or the impatience of the attendants. Repeated incidents of this kind are indication of the fact that hospital administration has no supervisory control over emergency services, which are totally entrusted to the junior doctors. Both doctors and para medical staff neither wear aprons, nor display name plates, which are mandatory for them. Certain doctors have repeatedly exhibited vicious traits and yet have escaped any action from the administration, encouraging them to flout norms of profession and decency and get away with them. Principal Medical College did not respond to repeated calls made on his number for his official comment. |
