TB patients crave for medicines, Health Dept unmoved | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 15: While the Tuberculosis (TB) patients in Jammu region are craving for medicines, the Health Department remains unmoved. A family member of a patient from Rajouri (presently putting up at Paloura, Jammu) said that his father is suffering with TB diseases for last two months and regularly visits Chest and Diseases hospital to get DOTS treatment. But whenever he visits the hospital, he said, the staff gives due to which the treatment of his father is getting delaying. "Doctor has advised against leaving treatment midway, but due to unavailability of medicine, we are worried about the health of my father," he added. He accused the Health Department of playing with the lives of patients by not providing drugs and treatment to them. He also alleged that the Health Department is least bothered about the patients' plight due to which the patients are running from pillar to post for getting treatment. Pertinently, India is home to largest number of TB patients in the world. The World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics for 2015 give an estimated incidence figure of 2.2 million cases of TB for India out of a global incidence of 9.6 million. TB remains the second leading cause of death worldwide, killing nearly two million people each year. According to doctors, if a TB patient doe not follow treatment it leads to major stages of TB in which the doctor has to examine the patient and find his or her stage. If the patient fall in category 1, the patient has to follow eight months further course to control the disease. Delay in treatment also leads to Multiple Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) which is advanced stage and the patient has to follow 24 months course in this case. State Tuberculosis Officer and Director of Health Department could not be contacted for their comments. |
