Militants loot Rs 11 lakh from J&K Bank | | | Muhammad Mukaram
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 15: Militants today struck at the Ratnipura branch of J&K Bank in Pulwama district and looted a cash of Rs 11 lakh at gunpoint in broad daylight. Four militants barged into the bank at about 2 pm and looted the cash at gunpoint, police sources said. This is the third such incident in the valley since the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes by the Centre, creating problems for the law-enforcing agencies which are already grappled with the law and order problem in the valley. Pulwama SSP Rayees Ahmad Bhat said a massive operation had been launched to track down the militants who had looted the bank. "They are part of the same group which had some time back looted Rs 14 lakh from a J&K Bank branch in central Kashmir's Budgam," he claimed. The top police officer said militants were looting the banks because they were faced with financial crunch after the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Talking to Early Times, Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu said that a security review meeting was held last week to discuss the matter. The meeting was attended by DGP, Home Secretary and the J&K Bank chairman. While on November 21, 2016, militants had robbed a bank in Chrar-e-Sharief area of Budgam of Rs 13 lakh cash, on December 8, they had looted Rs 12.5 lakh from a bank branch in Airihal area of Pulwama district and fired several gunshots while fleeing. |
