| No bomb disposal squad for Jammu region's 72 police stations | | Alarm, alarm, alarm! | | Peerzada Ummer

JAMMU, Dec 15: As the government is mulling to make the state Police a high tech force, equipping them with latest weaponry to deal with the present day militancy, records reveal that at present the police force has no bomb disposal equipments and the number of body protectors too is meagre.
Reports inform that Jammu and Kashmir Police has been procuring high tech and latest security appliances based on state-of-the-art technologies as a security measure against terror attacks, landmines and IED attacks by militants.
Meanwhile at present, there is a paucity of the basic equipments in police stations to combat anti- insurgency operations.
Survey conducted in this regard has revealed that there is no bomb disposal equipments in police stations of Srinagar, Jammu, Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam, Rajouri, Reasi and several other areas wherein the militancy related incidents have witnessed swell.
If the findings of the survey are to be believed the state authorities have made police a mere lathi force with no infrastructure as such to deal with the counter insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
In total number of 72 police stations and posts in Jammu region, there is no bomb disposal equipment. Also there are just 16 body protectors and 16 bullet proof vests available. Icing on the cake is that these 72 police posts have just one night vision device.
Similarly, in the summer capital Srinagar, there are 35 police stations and police posts but for them the state authorities have provided them just 22 bullet proof vests and 20 body protectors. Also, for the entire Srinagar, there are just two night vision devices available with the police and there are no binoculars.
In Rajouri area wherein there are 17 police stations and posts located, there are no night vision devices, no bomb disposal equipments. However, these stations have two binoculars, two body protectors and five bullet proof vests.
In South Kashmir's Anantnag, considered as militancy's hot bed, there are just eight bullet proof vests, four body protectors and four binoculars for 17 police stations in which the police personnel in hundreds are stationed.
Also, there are no bullet proof vests available in 19 police stations of Reasi and no night vision devices. There are eight body protectors and two binoculars in these stations available for the police.
Early Times has also learnt that he Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in its report has mentioned that there had not been basic equipment provided to the majority of the police stations in Jammu and Kashmir. "The life saving equipments viz., body protectors and bullet proof vests were not available with 64 police station of eight checked districts wherein 2865 police personnel remain posted, "reads the CAG report and added that police station is the first contact point of people in distress with the state government and hence the importance of efficient and effective police functioning at the police station level is important for building public confidence in state and creating cordial police- community relations. |
