Lakhanpur , Dec 15: A locality namely Garib Basti at Lakhanpur is not less than in grandeur to Chandigarh as all these big buildings have been constructed on BP canal. Everyone knows Water bodies at Lakhanpur are being unabatedly encroached whereas concerned department and district administration which must take initiative for preserving and developing water bodies at Gateway of J&K appeared to be mum, have closed their eyes while passing through Lakhanpur and act like spectators.
District administration has failed on all ground to control encroachment at Lakhanpur as most the encroachers are Chamchas ( puppets) in the hands of politicians sitting in J&K cabinet.
Irrigation officers keep their eyes close and even urge influential to encroach Kashmir and Basantpur canal to impress politicians.
These encroachers offer huge amount to politicians in elections that why nobody initiates any action against them and they know the inaction attitude of government after encroachment.
Everybody sitting in J&K government knows the better about encroachment as many Ministers visit through this road to Bani, Basohli, Billawar and out of the state.
Government allocates Rs 10-15 lakhs every year for the maintenance and repairing of old Basantpur Canal but at ground level the canal is blocked, encroached and never desalinating/ maintenance work occurred in last few decades. Nobody knows where the fund utilized every year.
The tall claims of J&K government are falling flat as illegal construction on banks of Kashmir Canal at Lakhanpur is rampantly going on but concerned departments have deliberately turned a Nelson' eye, due to reasons best known to them.
Sources informed that construction work on the banks of Kashmir Canal was at its full pace since last many months, but Irrigation department officials were feigning ignorance over the issue.
"Most of area of Kashmir canal has been encroached by politically influential families of Lakhanpur besides office bearers of Municipal Committee Lakhanpur", a local said. He further maintained that the encroachers were hand in glove with Irrigation department officials, due to which large portion of Kashmir Canal and Basantpur Canal has been encroached and still encroachment was on.
A source further maintained that it was the general modus operandi of encroachers. "Without involvement of officials, no one can encroach even a single feet of government land but it is known fact that vast tracts of irrigation land has been encroached and rhetoric of irrigation officials has been same since last many years", he rued. |
