Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 26: For the past two and half years the state government has failed to find an officer who can lead the Kashmir directorate of the tourism department. The department these days is being manned by a Joint Director.
In October 2015, the Jammu & Kashmir government appointed Mehmood Ahmad Shah as the in-charge Director Tourism Kashmir. Following this appointment it was expected that the state government would appoint a full time director of the tourism department in Kashmir.
Technically, Mehmood is the Joint Director Tourism, but still then he continues to be Director Tourism, Kashmir. For the past two and half years his replacement is yet to appear on the scene. This gives an impression that there is a dearth of an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer or Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) officer.
Sources told Early Times that there is a strong resentment among the people about the fact that the government has failed to find a suitable person to head the department of tourism in Kashmir. The failure on this front is somewhat perplexing more so when the state government claims that tourism is the backbone of Kashmir economy.
"Given the fact that there are many IAS and KAS officers in the state, one fails to understand why the state government is adopting a lackadaisical attitude in this respect. The state government should without any further delay appoint the full fledged Director Tourism, Kashmir so that there is no confusion whatsoever," said sources.
Sources said that Jammu & Kashmir is the only state in the country where the word 'in-charge' is grossly misused by the people at helm. They said that government's failure to appoint full- fledged Director Tourism in Kashmir has given enough hints that people at helm don't believe the officers so that any one among them is appointed on this position.
"Over the past two years or so the tourism department organized many events in Kashmir, but that does not mean that the government would not take the issue of appointing the Director Tourism Kashmir lightly. The appointment of full time Director Tourism Kashmir may give a new dimension to the department in Kashmir, but for that the government needs to be proactive," said sources.
Sources said that there are many capable officers in the state who can be appointed as Director Tourism Kashmir. They said that one among them has been relegated to the 'back bench' after being appointed as Managing Director of a Corporation. In addition to this there are many other officers who can take the tourism department to new heights in Kashmir.
