Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Mar 21: Two army men, two police personnel and two militants were killed today in an ongoing encounter with militants at Check Fatehkhan, Halmatpora area of this north Kashmir district Wednesday.
The army had claimed yesterday that three militants were killed in an encounter.
A top police official said that four security personnel including two SOG men, and two army men were killed, while as two militants were also neutralized.
The deceased soldiers have been identified as Mohammad Ashraf Rather and Naik Ranjeet Singh of 160 battalion of TA while two SOG men as Mohammad Yousuf Cheche (SPO) of Kachama, Kupwara and Deepak Thusoo of Jagti Camp Jammu, the police said.
The police official said that all of them were critically injured and taken to medical institute at the nearby army camp where all of them succumbed to injuries.
Two militants were also killed today while as three were eliminated yesterday as the encounter had erupted yesterday afternoon only thus taking the total number of militants killed in the gunfight to five, the official said.
The official said that the encounter is over, but we are sanitizing the area so that there is no possibility of anymore militants in the area, therefore the operation is still underway in its last stage, till the last reports came in.
Pertinently yesterday afternoon a group of 4-5 militants were spotted by security forces in Halmatpora forests, after which the joint team of forces intensified the searches; however the militants hiding in the area opened fire triggering off an encounter.
However reliable sources said that two more SOG men including Sub Inspector Harvinder Singh, army soldier and CRPF personnel were injured, among which one is said to be critical.
The gunfight was partially stopped yesterday night while as there was an intermittent firefight that was going on throughout the night, and the fresh firefight was resumed today early morning as the militants were trapped in the area, sources informed.
The army has claimed to have recovered three militant bodies from the encounter site.
The encounter started when a group of militants believed to be seven in number fired upon a joint team of army and SOG at Check Fatehkhan forests.
However a top army official while talking to early times said that, the militants sneaked into the valley recently and were waiting for an opportunity to cross in Lolab or Vilgam areas of this border district.
It is believed that the encounter site is around 10 kms from Kupwara main town and Halmathpora is the last village before the Line of Control (LoC) that is around 30 kms away from the spot.
Meanwhile Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, has paid rich tributes to the security personnel who were killed in Halmatpora Kupwara gunfight today.
She expressed solidarity with the bereaved families of the deceased and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
