Influential schools defy gazetted holiday 3/21/2018 10:52:30 PM Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 21: Despite a gazetted holiday announced by the government on March 21 in connection with the festival of Navroze, some of the influential private schools in the summer capital of Srinagar were functional mocking at the government norms and putting students and their parents to inconvenience. The parents said they had to face terrible inconvenience in the wake of schools kept open when all government and private institutions were closed. A parent whose ward studied at a prominent school in Soura said he had tried to convince the school authorities that it was unlawful to keep the school open when the people were celebrating a religious festival. "Instead of paying heed to my genuine request, the school principal out of arrogance announced exams for the day because of which I had no options but to send my ward to the school," complained a parent on the condition of anonymity. School teachers made similar complaints. They said a group of "influential private schools" who enjoy patronage of some senior ministers were the "cause of the mess." The staff member of a private school in Bemina said they had appealed the school management to keep the school shut in accordance with the holiday, but the school authorities refused arrogantly. "This government is unwilling to look into the complaints of our exploitation because of their nexus with these private schools," a teacher alleged. Sources said the complaints have reached the office of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti over schools defying government holiday. The Directorate of School Education Kashmir however had its own take on the issue. "Minister Sahib had asked us not to force any private school to be shut on this day, so there was an understanding between us and the private schools over the issue," an official told Early Times. He however supported the private schools. "These complaints are trying to unduly malign such institutions," the officials said.
