Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 21: In a bid to grab headlines and divert attention from the real issues, the school education department is out to launch cleanness frive while ignoring that there are more than 14 thousand schools in the state without the toilet facility for kids.
Pertinently, on Wednesday, the School Education Department launched its weeklong cleanliness drive in all the schools of the State.
Secretary School Education Department, reviewed the arrangements being made for the cleanliness drive at a meeting on Monday through video conferencing.
He as per the statement issued by the department also took stock of the education facilities in far-flung areas of the State like Keran, Machil, Tangdar, Gurez, Wailoo, Sinthan Kishtwar, Kaltoora, Sonbrari and other areas. The meeting was attended by Director School Education Kashmir and Chief Education Officers of many districts, and other concerned.
However, what the department has forgotten is that the government schools in the state are craving for the official attention and there is not even a single measure taken to put lid over the crises being faced by the students in this regard.
As per the data of the state's Unified District Information System for Education survey, there are around 6,351 schools which lack toilets for girls and 8,098 schools which lack toilets for boys. "How could the school education department shamelessly launch the sanitation drive when its own schools have no toilet facility. Those at the helm in the department should know that the people aren't that much foolish in the state that they could get lured by such theatricality and deception in the name of cleanness drives. The amount that is being spent on such things could have been well utilized for developing the infrastructure in the government run schools that have been forgotten by the government," says an official of the department.
Meanwhile, as per the government data, more than 71 per cent schools do not even have basins or taps to wash hands near toilets and urinals. There are around 28,000 government schools in J&K,.
The government claimed that in the last two years, around 17,506 schools were provided the toilet facility under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and 2,555 schools were provided the facility under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan. Meanwhile, as per the press statement of the education department issued on Monday, during the meeting, Secretary Education was given a detailed brief of education facilities in far-flung areas of the Valley. He stressed on providing sufficient teaching staff to the schools in such areas and directed CEOs to personally monitor the teaching-learning process in schools.
He further directed them to expedite the process of the engagement of teachers for academic arrangement on a temporary basis. He also directed all concerned to take necessary steps for establishing herbal gardens in the schools.
Meanwhile, Director School Education Kashmir Dr. G.N. Itoo along with senior officers of the department visited BHSS Batamaloo and other adjoining schools to take stock of the arrangements for the celebration of cleanliness week.
