Geelani's much ado about nothing!

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 26: Pakistan agent Syed Ali Shah Geelani is no body to talk about the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, the three distinct regions of the state founded by Dogras of Jammu in March 1846. He represents only a particular section of society in Kashmir, excluding the internally-displaced Kashmiri Pandits whose commitment to India is just remarkable and commendable. He has no say whatsoever in Jammu and Ladakh where the people have their own aspirations, needs and compulsions and whose political aspirations are different from those of people of Kashmir. And still he poses himself as a great factor in the political situation in the state and puts forth conditions before government of India for the resolution of the so-called J&K issue.
The other day, Geelani objected to Government of India's assertion that J&K was an integral part of India and said that this assertion of New Delhi constituted a major roadblock for the successful dialogue on the political future of J&K.
Terming the Government of India's stated position that Kashmir was its integral part as a major roadblock for a successful dialogue, self-styled chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Geelani said: "If Delhi was sincere about resolving Kashmir issue, five-point proposals advanced by the Hurriyat leadership in 2010 should form the basis for talks".
"We are against war as it brings destruction. We want New Delhi and also Islamabad to talk as some gestures are being made today about resumption of dialogue" he saidadding," So far 150 rounds of talks have been held, but all failed to yield results. There is a reason for the failure of all these rounds of dialogue and that is New Delhi's claim that Kashmir is its integral part". "It (Government of India) claims Kashmir is its integral part and at the same time, it says talks should be held for the resolution of the issue," he also said, adding that major roadblock lies in the Delhi's dual claims.
Geelani urged New Delhi and the Islamabad to start dialogue with the active participation of all the parties to the dispute and asserted that "people of Kashmir are the primary party to the issue and can't be ignored".
"If the 2010 proposal doesn't suit New Delhi, there is another way to resolve Kashmir and that is to implement the 18 resolutions pending in the United Nations to which both, India and Pakistan are a signatory. Allow people of J&K to choose their fate," he said, in an obvious reference to Delhi," he said.
What does he mean by people of Kashmir? The people of Kashmir do not mean the people of the whole State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Similarly, the people of Jammu and Ladakh have no doubt whatsoever about the political status of the state vis-à-vis India. They consider it an integral part of India and have been opposing the secessionist politics in Kashmir since 1947. The fact of the matter is that while Ladakh stands for UT, people of Jammu stand for a regime that is their own and that is within India and under Indian Constitution, barring Article 35-A and Article 370.
