SRINAGAR, Apr 26: Militants carried out an ambush on a police picket guarding a temple in the summer capital of the state and decamped with at least four rifles. Reinforcement was sent to the area to nab the militants however, they managed to escape.
Reports said that a group of militants believe to be seven in number attacked the police personnel guarding the temple building at Gouripora in the Sanat Nagar area of Srinagar district. The police personnel guarding the temple building belong to the 13th battalion of Jammu & Kashmir Armed Police.
Reports said that at about 7:30 PM on Wednesday, the militants attacked the police post and kept the four police personnel posted at the temple hostage on gun point. The militants asked the police personnel to hand over the automatic rifles to them. The police personnel said that they are not in possession of automatic rifles but some Self Loading Rifles (SLRs).
The militants broke the lock of the room where the rifles were kept and decamped with the same. Before leaving the scene the militants said that they would not hesitate to kill the police personnel in case they disclosed the details of the incident to the department and also to the people living in the neighbourhood of the temple.
It was only after half an hour that the police personnel rang up one of the neighbours and asked him to unlock the door since the main door was locked by the militants. Following the incident reinforcement in the form of Jammu & Kashmir Police and army was sent to the area in order to ascertain the details about the whole incident.
The area was cordoned off by the police and army searches were carried out in order to nab the militants. However, the militants who were carrying pistols and guns managed to run away from the site of incident. The militants decamped with at least four rifles including an INSAS rifle. The militants managed to run away with one INSAS rifle, one carbine and two SLRs.
A police spokesman in a statement said that militants attacked an armed guard of JKAP 13 battalion at Gouripora in city outskirts of Srinagar. The spokesman said that militants managed to run away with the rifles from the spot adding that investigations have been initiated in the case.
