Admin fails to provide ration to migrant labourers in Jammu
4/24/2020 11:33:46 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 24: The District Administration Jammu is allegedly is not paying requisite attention to the list of migrant labourers complied by the Labour Department for distribution of ration amid COVID -19 lockdown as most of the labourers are allegedly not getting their due share.
Sources in the Labour Department told Early Times that soon after the lockdown was imposed, the department was asked to compile a list of migrant labourers living across Jammu region and after lot of efforts the list was prepared by the department and the same was submitted to the concerned District Administrations for the distribution of ration.
They further said that the thousands of the migrant labourers, who are stranded in various part of the Jammu region have been facing acute shortage of ration as the proper distribution is not being done as per the list compiled by the Labour Department.
While talking to the Early Times labour union leader Harbans Choudhary said that no proper ration material has been provided to actual migrant labours who have given their names to Labour Department. “Whenever we enquire from labour officials regarding this issue, they tell us that the list has been forwarded to concerned officials.”
“Only in some cases powers are delegated to tehsildars, the ration is being provided as per the list while in most of the cases workers particularly in municipal areas are being ignored and due to which they are facing starvation,” he said.
He further informed that Nodal Officers and Labour Department should be held accountable for not providing ration to all migrant labourers given in list only then the purpose will be materialized.
Meanwhile, he said that Centre has provided crores of rupees to States and UTs particularly for helping poor migrant labours but it seems that govt officials are not seriously discharging their duties and poor workers are suffering due to which resentment is growing among them.
