Internal democracy missing in Saffron party?
4/24/2020 11:34:12 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 24: Bharatiya Janata Party which leaves no opportunity to demean the opposition parties by describing them as family oriented parties has reportedly nominated kith and kin, and “chamchas” of senior leaders in newly formed committees.
“To be nominated for a particular party position it’s necessary to remain in the good books of the senior leaders. The ones who have no godfathers are denied space,” alleged a BJP worker.
Soon after outbreak of the COVID-19 the saffron party announced the names of the office bearers of different committees at various levels. Those who didn’t find place in the newly framed committees took to social media took to expose the system by stating that the office bearers were nominated rather than being elected.
Exasperated, a Saffron party worker wrote on social media: “When mother is district president, then son should get the post. Paying attendance in the office of a senior leader has borne fruit.”
Another user wrote: “If flattery is given importance here (in Saffron party), then I will not be with them”.
Another wrote: “The sycophancy of a particular leader has won, while another responded, “Brother the first feature of politics is flattery”.
Another senior youth party member alleged that only those, who were close to some of the senior leaders of the party, were given preference and nominated for various types of posts. “How much a party leader has been contributing for the party work, or rendering help to the masses or doing the party works wholeheartedly, is no decisive factor but closeness to the seniors is the deciding factor to find a place in the newly constituted committees”, the youth leader said, adding that “Earlier also when the senior office bearers of the party were announced, they were also nominated and not elected per se.”
Such trend could also inferred from the social media posts of newly elected office bearers, who publicly acknowledged the contribution of particular senior leader for his nomination.
A politician said: “The Saffron party leaders have been targeting the other parties terming them family oriented but even in the Saffron party, the relatives of the senior leaders the ones close to party seniors are favoured openly. ”
He said, adding that “this diminishing inter party democracy is detrimental to the democratic character of any party and pushes it towards consolidation of authoritarianism in the political parties.”
