SRINAGAR, May 19: Acting tough on the 'tainted' and 'influential' officers in the state, the government today ordered for the attachment of Director Health Services Kashmir, Dr. Saleem-ur-Rehman with the General Administration Department (GAD).
The action comes after allegations that Dr. Saleem is involved in many corruption cases in the department. The GAD issued the order in this regard late in the day and the former Director Health Services Kashmir has been asked to report to GAD for further posting.
Sources told Early Times that Dr. Saleem was summoned to the Civil Secretariat in the morning and was told there that he has been attached. In the morning he attended to his office and disposed off some files before rushing to the Civil Secretariat where he was served with the 'marching orders'.
"In the morning Dr. Saleem reached his office located in the Old Secretariat and started doing his job. After some time he received a call from the Civil Secretariat and he was asked to report immediately. Dr. Saleem was told that he has been attached with the GAD and should report there for further posting," said sources.
Sources said the verbal order was followed by a formal order with the same being issued late in the day. With the issuance of the formal order it became clear that Dr. Saleem has been formally attached and it was no more a speculation. However, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir is yet to receive the formal order for the attachment of the former director.
In the meantime, confusion has crept in as who would hold the charge of Director Health Services Kashmir after the attachment of Dr. Saleem. While some people say that Commissioner Secretary, Health & Medical Education department, Shantmanu would hold the charge there are others who say that the charge would be assigned to any Deputy Director of the health department. The formal order in this regard is yet to be issued thereby adding to the confusion.
Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK) had been demanding for action against Dr. Saleem accusing him of being involved in the drug kit scam. DAK has welcomed the attachment of Dr. Saleem and said that the action is a step in the right direction. The Association has hailed the government for the step and this would be followed by many more such steps.
Dr. Saleem, a close confidante of former chief minister and senior Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad has been accused of superseding many of his seniors while being elevated to the position of Director Health Services Kashmir. In fact some of the senior doctors took potshots at his elevation and accused that the decision was a political one with Dr. Saleem enjoying the patronage of the former chief minister.
