Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 19: The PDP, which is in the driving seat, has once again asserted its position and authority and told the BJP to remain within limits and not to make any statement that negates the "healing touch policy". In fact, the PDP told the BJP to keep its mouth shut and not make any statement that was not appreciated in Kashmir. The case in point is the Education Minister and PDP leader's statement that the Jammu & Kashmir Government considered issuing passport to Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani a "humanitarian issue". In other words, he gave a clear hint that Pakistani agent and disturber of peace in Kashmir Geelani would be granted passport as per rules. "The Government will deal with the issue of granting passport to Geelani at the humanitarian level. This is a humanitarian issue," Akther said.
It is pertinent to mention here that Geelani, along with his wife and son, last Friday submitted an online application form for the issuance of the passport in their favour. They mentioned that one of their daughters, Farhat Jabeen Geelani, who stays in Jeddah, was not keeping well and they wanted to visit the place to inquire about her health. Geelani while applying for the fresh passport had mentioned that he, along with his wife, wanted to leave for Jeddah as soon as possible. Geelani, as is too well known, had repeatedly said that he was not an Indian and that Jammu & Kashmir must become part of Pakistan as it was a Muslim-majority region. On April 15, pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans were raised, seditious speeches were delivered and Pakistani flags waved to welcome Geelani. On May 1, at the Tral rally, which was addressed by Geelani, also saw many of his followers raising Pakistani flags and pro-Pakistan slogans.
The online application of Geelani and his wife seeking passport was questioned by the Kashmir-based spokesperson of the BJP, Khalid Jehangir. He asked Geelani to acknowledge that he was an Indian and apologize for his anti-national activities if he wants to get passport to visit his ailing daughter in Saudi Arabia. "Passport cannot be given to Geelani sahib till he apologizes for the mistakes he has committed during the past 25 years. Passports are issued to Indian citizens and not the ones who don't believe in India and its democracy," Khalid Jehangir said in a statement in Srinagar on Sunday.
What Khalid Jehangir said was quite appropriate. He was right when he asked Geelani to declare himself an Indian and apologize for the crimes he committed against the Indian State, the Indian nation and the people of the state during the past more than two decades. Now that the PDP-led coalition government has come out with an official stand on the application of Geelani and his wife and described the issue as "humanitarian", what will the BJP do now? It appears that Khalid Jehangir didn't consult his high command before making a nice and bold statement. There are cogent reasons to believe that the Narendra Modi-controlled Indian Foreign Office would go with the PDP and humiliate Khalid Jehangir. After PM Modi and BJP national president, Amit Shah, want to solve the Kashmir problem. Khalid, it seems, is in for an embarrassment. He should have followed in the footsteps his colleague Hina Bhat at whose behest that the entire BJP leadership fell flat on the issue of Article 370.
