Artificial lake controversy willfully created to scuttle AIIMS' movement | Diverting attention from big issue | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 19: It was with a dubious motive that certain vested interests and anti-Jammu forces announced on May 15 that the ongoing Tawi Artificial Lake Project was not technically and economically viable and that the project, considered by the people of Jammu a "dream project", could be shelved. It was not an off-the-cuff remark; it was a carefully thought statement. The purpose was to puncture the ongoing popular movement against the unscrupulous BJP and the BJP-led NDA government at the centre and for the establishment of the sanctioned AIIMS in Jammu. The purpose was to divert the attention of the agitating people of Jammu province from the real issue and create an environment that, according to the anti-Jammu forces, would make them focus on the Tawi Artificial Lake Project instead of the AIIMS. Those who declared as economically and technically not viable the Lake Project in the presence of BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and his party colleague and MoS Priya Sethi had hoped that their attempt would produce the desired result and make their task easy as far as the establishment of the AIIMS in Kashmir was concerned. Much to their chagrin, it didn't happen. What has happened is to the contrary. The people of Jammu province saw through the nasty game plan and intensified their struggle for the AIIMS and decided to put pressure on the government to complete the Lake Project at the earliest. The people of Jammu, who are politically conscious and have been defeating the Kashmiri separatists and controversial policies of the Union government since 1947 at regular intervals knew it well that no power could shelve the ongoing project over the River Tawi. They were not impressed with the press conferences held and statements made by the rattled and "dishonest" BJP leaders on the issue of the Artificial Lake. Convinced that the BJP and the Kashmiri party were on the same page and that both were out to destroy the Jammu cause, the Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association not only struck work on Monday but also extended the strike by one more day. The Bar Association will hold a meeting today within the premises of the High Court with political and non-political organizations, civil society groups and others to chalk out a future programme. The first action could be one more bandh across Jammu region. On the other hand, the Shiv Sena and the Dogra Front dubbed the BJP ministers" as "mitti ke madho". Not only this, the women wing of the Congress party tried to gherao the official residence of Nirmal Singh, located on the opposite side of the State Guest House and showed bangles. Nirmal Singh could escape embarrassment because he was not present at his residence. But it was not important. What was significant was the methodology the women wing of the Congress party adopted to show the BJP and Nirmal Singh their rightful place. Besides, many in Jammu condemned as "Jaichands" the BJP Ministers and the so-called BJP lawmakers. Those who believe that they can defeat the ongoing struggle for AIIMS in Jammu and shelve the Lake Project are living in a fool's paradise. They are dealing with the people of Jammu province, they should remember. They would do well to concede both the demands at the earliest, failing which things would not be promising for them. |
