Tariq Karra files nomination papers from Srinagar | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Apr 9 : Senior Peoples Democratic Party leader, Tariq Hamid Karra filed his nomination papers for Srinagar-Budgam Parliamentary constituency on Wednesday. Karra is challenged by National Conference chief and union minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah who filed his nomination papers for the seat on Monday. Karra was accompanied by PDP patron and former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayed to the office of Returning officer Srinagar. Interestingly on Monday Dr. Farooq was accompanied by State Congress president, Saif-ud-Din Soz besides Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The ruling NC- Congress alliance is jointly fighting the election in the state. Though Awami Itihad Party (AIP) headed by Er Rashid and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have also fielded their candidates from Srinagar , however, there will be a straight contest between Dr. Abdullah and Tariq Hamid Karra. Pertinently Farooq is seeking re-election from the Srinagar constituency. According to observers Srinagar constituency comprising on 15 assembly segments is to witness an interesting contest as the ruling National Conference faces a strong anti-incumbency wave which could certainly have an impact on the results. Meanwhile, Mufti Muhammad Sayed while talking to reporters after Karra filed his nomination papers, said, "We are hopeful that people will vote for our candidates on the performance of our government exhibited in 2002." Mufti added, "people will also see our role as an opposition and vote for us because they have been let down by the present regime." "There is a need to end the turmoil and PDP will work for it," he said adding "In 2002 we tried our best, we freed prisoners and changed the situation all together but later on our initiatives were not taken forward and everything went wrong" Mufti said. Mufti said people of Jammu and Kashmir had a sigh of relief during his tenure, Mufti said that if voted the PDP candidates will raise the voice for Kashmiris in the highest democratic institution of India. "We hope that people will vote for our party so that we can take forward our agenda of resolution and peace" said the former chief minister. On Parliament attack convict, Afzal Guru's hanging, Mufti claimed that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was well aware about the hanging of Afzal Guru much earlier but he did nothing to save him. "How is it possible that New Delhi hanged a citizen of J&K and the Chief Minister did not know about it?" Mufti questioned adding that the people of Kashmir are feeling more alienated after the hanging of Afzal Guru. Rejecting BJPs election manifesto about Article 370, Mufti said that the special status of the state is unquestionable. "We want more than the special status so how is it possible to talk about its revocation?" Mufti however praised former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's initiatives about Kashmir and said he had started a process with Pakistan and Kashmiris. |
