Non-state subject purchases huge chunk of land in Kokernag | Hundreds of trees chopped off overnight | | Saahil Suhail Anantnag, Apr 9: With BJP election manifesto sparking a heated debate among the political and social circles of the state, non-state subjects have started eyeing land in the valley. If official sources are to be believed many non-state subjects in nexus with the land mafias here are in the process of purchasing huge chunks of land in tourist resorts of Kokernag in Anantnag district. Sources said that one Rakesh Kohli son of Bhola Nath Kohli of Azadpur Delhi has already purchased around 40 kanals of land in Bandoora Kokernag in the name of Khuram Khan of Shopian. "Though the locals after learning about the non-state subject purchasing the land in the name of a Shopian resident approached the court. The court stayed the selling of the land on the grounds that the same is the fertile horticulture land," sources said. They said that the land mafia despite the court order in nexus with the officials of the district administration, however managed to chop off hundreds of fruit producing apple trees on the land last night. "Since we had brought stay on the selling of land on the grounds that the use of horticulture land can't be changed. But much to our shock this morning we saw over 150 apple trees having been cut during the night hours only," said a group of locals. They asked the district admin to immediately come into action against the inter-state land mafia. "On one hand the politicians are making tall claims about protecting the special position of the state and on the other hand the officers are hell bent on eroding the same. We can prove that the land has been purchased by a non-state subject for setting up a factory," the angry locals said. They threatened to come out on the roads if the district admin fails to come into action against the land mafia facilitating the purchase of land by the non-state subjects here. Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, S Biswas said that the locals should approach the concerned Tehsildar with a written complaint. "Let them register a complaint and we will look into what has happened," DC said. |
