Pending cases against Ministers render SAC a toothless tiger
4/9/2014 11:52:04 PM

Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, Apr 9: With cases against Ministers and higher authorities pending for years together now the much talked about State Accountability Commission (SAC) has proved to be a toothless tiger with its existence on paper only.
The Commission set up to weed out corruption from the state has failed to do the justice since no action whatsoever has been taken against the tainted. The menace of corruption is still at its peak, since the wings of SAC have been clipped thus making it yet another useless recommendatory body in the state.
There is no seriousness on part of the Government that can show it is concerned to eradicate menace of bribe. In fact its roots are growing deeper and deeper like that of a big tree. It is difficult to uproot such a big tree then.
"Many times the news about the suspension of employees is highlighted in the media, both electronic and print. These employees are of the lower rank from revenue or any other department. After some time they are reinstated and this leaves the people shell shocked," said Mohammad Ayub from Beerwah in Central Kashmir's Budgam district.
People ask as to why the State Accountability Commission was created. Was it created to silence the voices of the apprehensive people? The accountability means to pull up somebody for the irregularities he has done.
"There are land scams, food scams, drug scams and many more. The Government comes with a press note that an enquiry has been initiated. And when the enquiry points towards a political bigwig it is hushed up and the matter is closed by saying that nothing concrete has been found against the accused," said Mohammad Lateef from Narbal.
There are reasons why these enquiries are half hearted in nature and why these enquiries fail. Those scams which involve influential are never going to be enquired because this is going to damage the image of the party to which he belongs, and also the coalition will be in danger.
"Not much before the infamous drug scam surfaced. It is said that drugs worth crores were procured. The whole consignment of drugs was spurious. Who orders for procurement? Who regulates the supply? Sure all these exercises are done at the highest level of administration. What action has been taken against these merchants of death," said a medico wishing anonymity.
As and when election days come near the leaders mislead people with emotional speeches, colorful banners and huge portraits of political bigwigs in the same way as a mother tries to please her child with colorful things.
"All the parties promise sky to the people. They assure people of pure governance, free from corruption. During election times these leaders sing lullabies to rock the people to sleep and when they come to power, they themselves sleep for five years," said Ali Mohammad from Batamaloo.
People want a change which the opportunists won't like. People are power which they must believe in. They must not let the coming chance go waste. If people really want a change, they have to come out of the traditional politics and give befitting reply to the anti-people leadership.
