Has Kashmir really taken a favourable turn? | Scare in South Kashmir likely to impact polling | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 22: The recent attacks on panchayat members and police men particularly in South Kashmir have put a question mark on the security arrangements for the Lok Sabha elections scheduled to commence in Kashmir from April 24. It has also exploded the myth that Kashmir has taken a favourable turn. The situation continues to be as grim. The killings have an impact on the overall situation and may also have a serious bearing on the polling turnout. Reminiscent of early 90s when National Conference workers would announce their dissociation with NC and politics through paid advertisements in local dailies, the panchayat members have also opted for the recourse. If reports from Tral are to be believed then New Delhi, the state government and the security agencies have to do some serious rethinking. The panchs and sarpanchs have planned mass resignation on Friday and if it actually happens, few people will go to the booths on Thursday. The way the mainstream parties have reacted to the development is ironical, say political experts. They have been blaming each other for the killings. However, every time their claims contradict the police version. Shockingly the Election Commission of India has ignored the complaints filed by a political party seeking ban on such reckless statements. These claims and counter-claims reflect that they have nothing to offer to the people during electioneering. The blame game, it is widely believed, has reduced the politicians to ordinary Kashmiri women who go to rooftops to curse their neighbours. And, while the political parties are busy pulling each other's legs, there is a visible scare in South Kashmir especially in Pulwama district where most of the killings have been effected. Reports suggest that militants owing allegiance to Hizbul Mujahideen paraded in some Tral areas a few days ago urging the people to boycott elections. Kashmir is sitting on a volcano once again. Though dormant for the time being, it may make its way any time and catch the administration and the politicians napping. What next? The question haunts the commoner in the haunted Valley. |
