Threatening posters surface in different villages of South Kashmir
Tral killings sent shivers down the spine of Panchayat representatives, more than two dozen resign

SRINAGAR, Apr 22: With hardly 24 hours left for the elections to the South Kashmir's Anantnag Lok Sabha seat, panic has gripped the people more so the Panchayat representatives in various areas of the South Kashmir. This has resulted into a situation where more than two dozen Panchayat representatives have resigned.
Threatening posters have come up in these areas and people have been asked to stay away from the election process. The posters have also warned the Sarpanchs and Panchs of dire consequences in case they did not resign from their posts. Following the threat around 25 Sarpanchs and Panchs of the Tral area tendered their resignations today.
Reports reaching here said that people of Tral, Kakapora, Lelhar, Pampore, Wuyan, Alchi Bagh, Chandhara, Khrew, Andrus and some other localities were scared after threatening posters of Hizbul Mujahideen appeared asking the people not to vote for the April 24 election to the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat.
Sources told Early Times that some of the posters appeared in the Batagund and Amler villages of Tral town in which people were asked to take a lesson from the killings of Monday night. The posters said that all the people who are linked with the mainstream political parties would be targeted. The posters also asked the Panchayat representatives to immediately resign from their posts and make the same public.
It would be in place to mention here that three persons including a Sarpanch and a numberdar were killed in the Amler and Batagund villages of Tral area. Militants first struck in the Amler village and killed Mohammad Anwar, the numberdar. Minutes later they targeted the Sarpanch, Ghulam Nabi Mir and his son Firdous Ahmad in the Batagund village.
Sources said that Sarpanchs and Panchs who resigned today include Jung Bahadur Singh, Mohammad Maqbool Khanday, Mushtaq Ahmad Gujri, Abdul Rahman Wani, Mohammad Afzal Mir, Jalaludin Rather, Mohammad Jabar Ganie, Mohammad Ashraf Sheikh, Manzoor Ahmad Dar, Mohammad Ismail Khanday, Naseema Begum, Hameeda Begum Ghulam Rasool Bhat, Mohmmad Akram Sofi, Shafeeqa Bano, Ghulam Nabi Najar and Sarwa Begum.
The Panchayat representatives put posters in their respective areas while announcing their resignation. The Panchayat representatives through the posters announced their disassociation from the various mainstream political parties. Pertinently in the past as well, Sarpanchs and Panchs have resigned in various parts of Kashmir valley.
Meanwhile, police has not arrested anybody as yet in connection with the killing of three persons in the Tral area on Monday night. However, sources said that brothers and some other relatives of militants who reside in Tral have been picked up for questioning by the police. Police and security forces had launched a manhunt to nab the killers as soon as the twin militant attacks took place.
