Fearing defection, Farooq decides to axe Omar's coterie

Early Times Report

jammu, June 12: The internal crisis in the National Conference has deepened to the effect that it could result in possible split in the party. Fearing such an eventuality , party president Dr Farooq Abdullah has decided to initiate damage control by doing away with some leaders who have no mass base, but have assumed positions of significance in the party.
There is now rebellion within the party after humiliating defeat of the party in the parliamentary elections. Mehboob Beg, the former MP from south Kashmir has now openly blamed the Finance Minister A R Rather as one of the reasons for his defeat.
Rather and Sagar were totally sidelined in the Omar Abdullah headed government. There were credible reports that Omar had decided to axe both these leaders in the last cabinet reshuffle but were saved by the last minute intervention of Dr Abdullah.
The unrest within the NC is being attributed to manner in which Omar Abdullah had led the organization along with his coterie. Now with the recent debacle, the people who have been sidelined and defeated are contemplating to switch sides, and this could prove political disastrous for already mauled NC.
It is for this reason that NC president Farooq Abdullah had come down heavily on the people who he said had only given wrong information about the ground reality.
He though did not name them but it was clear that he is going to fire the coterie of Omar Abdullah to keep the flock together.
" Omar's coterie for their vested interests, kept befooling Dr Sahib( Farooq Abdullah) with concocted and wrong information. And this resulted in his defeat, which he could never have imagined.
He is not only furious but is worried about the future of the party. And it's for this reason he has decided to axe some people and give importance of real ground workers," said a senior NC leader.
