NC plays with fire to counter PDP | Are Kashmiris a separate nation? | | Early Times Report
jammu, June 12: On June 9, NC president Farooq Abdullah, who lost the Lok Sabha election to PDP candidate and former Finance Minister Tariq Hamid Karra, appointed Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar as general secretary of the party. Sagar will be the first ever leader in the NC who was elevated to this position despite the fact that he didn't belong to the Abdullah dynasty. The appointment of Sagar as the NC general secretary has been described by observers and NC-watchers as a desperate attempt of desperate and frustrated Farooq Abdullah to infuse new life in the organization and help the party neutralize the growing influence of the PDP in the Valley. Significantly, Sagar, a close associate of Farooq Abdullah, has started his inning in the party as general secretary with a highly controversial and divisive statement. He has said that the flag of the NC is more important than any individuals and personal political goals. Not just this, he has also described the Kashmiri Muslims as a nation. "It was Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Abdullah who sacrificed his entire life for the welfare our nation," he has said, and added that he would tread the path charted by the father and founder of the party, NC. By terming the Kashmiri Muslims a nation, Sagar has committed a serious wrong. He has, in fact, spoken the language of Mohammad Ali Jinnah who fought for and got Pakistan on the basis of two-nation concept. Indeed, he has started playing with fire to counter the PDP, which led in almost 40 assembly segments in the Kashmir Valley in the Lok Sabha election. Kashmiri Muslims are not a nation. They are part and parcel of the Indian nation. India is one state, one nation and one people and there is not a single country in the world where different nations co-exist. Those who term the Kashmiri Muslims as a distinct nation actually negate the very idea of India and the Indian state itself, something unpardonable. Now that Ali Mohammad Sagar has crossed the line, it is time for Farooq Abdullah to explain the party stand on what Sagar said. Not to do so would simply mean that he also subscribes to what Sagar advocated. If he feels that by unleashing the likes of Sagar he would be able to take on and defeat the PDP, then he is surely living in a fool's paradise. This is not the way to neutralize the influence of the PDP, which is going very strong as of now. |
