Rehabilitation package is inadequate: Flood victims | Sufferers reject Rs 70000 - Rs 75000 package for house damages | | Javaid Naikoo
jammu, Oct 8: With state Government proposing to give relief packages to the flood affected people of Jammu and Kashmir as per norms set by The Ministry of Home Affairs, the sufferers whose houses are completely or partially damaged have rejected the norms set by government. According to them, the package does not go down well with them keeping in view the present market position. According to official figures a total of 83, 044 concrete houses were damaged by floods completely while as 96,089 houses were damaged partially, 21,162 semi-concrete houses were completely damaged and 54,264 such houses suffered partial damage and other structures including granaries damaged in the floods numbered around 353,864. People whose houses were completely or partially damaged reject the relief package set by government while terming the package inadequate. Flood affected people of Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Kulgam and Pulwama of South Kashmir while talking to Early Times said government package was inadequate. Price of goods like bricks, wood, iron and tin have soared up considerably. Abdul rehman of Goripora, Pulwama said Rs 75000 are not enough. "How can I reconstrtuct my house with this amount," he asked. He said the government must keep in mind the present price of construction material before taking a finaldecision on the package. Most of the sufferers have voiced similar demands. Pertinently Commissioner Secretary to Government, Vinod Kaul wrote a letter to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir under letter number rev/camp/hn/2014 dated 23/09/2014 and through the same letter informed the Divisional Commissioner that "It has been reported that in some Districts, the relief against damaged house is being paid as per old norms. In this connection I would like to inform you that norms set by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India were revised duringNovember 2013, the revised by Ministry of Home Affairs vide no 32-3/2013-NDM-I dated 28/11/2013. In a meeting today, the Chief minister, Omar Abdullah fixed a time frame of one week for the officials to complete the task of relief distribution to the people whose houses were completely damaged by the floods. |
