Untimely culling of trees lead to blockade of National Highway, city roads | Departmental inertia………….. | | K Koushal JAMMU, Oct 8: Whether it was the unpreparedness in handling the post-flood situations in the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir by the SDRF or the yesterday's thunderstorm that has wreaked havoc across the Jammu province, all that one could see after witnessing these natural catastrophes is the inertia of the respective departments to tackle these natural disasters. As per reliable sources in the Forest Department, the extensive damage to the infrastructure and roads due to the heavy velocity winds that uprooted many old trees in the Jammu city and its outskirts on the intervening night of October 7-8 has happened because of certain problems within the Forest Department. Further discussing the nature of the problem, he said that the Forest department needs to cull the planted trees in a time bound manner for the generation of revenue but in majority of the cases, department doesn't release the necessary funds for the culling of trees owing to which the branches of trees get detached and fell on the commuters to cause road accidents during thunderstorms. As far as the Urban Forestry is concerned, sources said there is a provision of the auctioning of the trees and extraction of the timber products for the revenue generation and in case of the Social Forestry, there is no such provision but senior officials usually fails to complete the auctioning process. Further, as per a reply tabled in the house of the legislatures in reply to a written question of the MLA Marh Choudhary Sukhnandan, for the auctioning process in the Urban Forestry, there is no need to complete the Form number 25 for the culling of trees which is a requisite in case of culling of other trees. |
