How can Pakistani guns be silenced permanently? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 8: Merely putting a flag meeting on the hold by the MHA after six civilians were killed, over 60 injured and over 20,000 forced to leave their homes because of Pakistan shelling of civilian habitations in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts cannot be accepted as the 'befitting reply' to aggression started by the neighbouring country. The fact that the latest spate of indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas in addition to specific targeting of BSF outposts by Pakistan rangers was started on an auspicious day like the Eid needs stronger understanding by New Delhi. No religion in the World teaches violence or targeting of unarmed civilians much less on an auspicious day like the Eid. That such an act of aggression was launched by Pakistan rangers on the international border which was immediately followed by its army on the LoC proves there has been a definite design to these hostilities. Now two days after the World attention has remained focussed on the borders between India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan has again raised the Kashmir issue in the UN. That must make it clear to New Delhi what had prompted Pakistan rangers and its army to start hostilities on the borders in J&K on Eid when Muslims throughout the State were celebrating Eid and their Non-Muslim brothers were greeting them with sweets and well wishes. Pakistan has not given up on either raising the Kashmir issue or picking up the gauntlet against India ever since division of the sub-continent in 1947. It has fought three full fledged wars, one limited conflict in 1999 and continues to aid and sponsor terrorism in J&K. This has been the policy of Pakistan whether it was ruled by a military dictator or an elected government since 1947. There is no doubt that for India to be peaceful, there must be peace in Pakistan and for both the countries to progress they must have good neighbourly relations. But, can the lessons of history be ignored for euphemistic altruism? How long can innocent villagers continue to pay with their lives, livestock and property to stand hostage to the belligerence between the two countries? Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh has said Pakistan must stop this aggression and understand that things have changed in India. This message being verbally delivered to Pakistan by Mr. Singh has no mean. This has been proved by Pakistan's overlooking of Rajnath Singh's message as it continues to target villages close to the borders in Jammu region with impunity. The Congress party has been asking questions about what the central government is doing to silence Pakistan guns. Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad has been in the forefront of his party's criticism of the BJP government in Delhi. Notwithstanding what the Congress led UPA government did during its tenure to address Pakistan's aggression, the BJP led government headed by Narendra Modi was believed to act firmly to put Pakistan aggression down. It is believed the two countries cannot go to war because both are nuclear powers and the World would not sit and watch as mute spectator if such an eventuality ever arrived. But, should this fact become India's weakness and Pakistan's strength? This is a question the BJP government at the centre must decide before issuing warnings and putting flag meetings on hold. Cosmetic threatenings and diplomatic overtures would not work. Have they worked in the past? |
