Maharashtra & Haryana Assembly poll crucial for BJP
10/8/2014 11:03:47 PM

Will Haryana and Maharashtra witness any Modi
wave or record absence of Modi charisma during the
ensuing Assembly election ? This is the question that haunts not only the BJP but the Congress too.
After its spectacular performance in the Lok Sabha election where the BJP and its allies won an absolute majority the saffron brigade suffered reverses in the Assembly by elections held in nine states. The BJP suffered a major setback in the Assembly by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, the States it had swept in the Lok Sabha polls four months ago, losing 13 of the 24 seats held by it.Out of the 32 Assembly seats across nine States the BJP won 10, Congress seven and Samajwadi Party seven while the TDP, Trinamool Congress, AIUDF and the CPI(M) bagged one each. One seat in Sikkim was won by an Independent. And when the results for the Assembly election were out political analysts declared that Modi had lost its shine.
It was so because these very analysts had stated that the main and the only force behind BJP's victory in the Lok Sabha poll was Narendra Modi.Hence he was held responsible for the poor performance of the BJP in the Assembly by elections. And the analysts were of the opinion that since Modi had not been able to restore to India his promised "Ache Din" voters voted against the BJP.It was believed that vote against the BJP was vote against Modi.
Failure of the Modi led G overnment to curb Inflation in the prices of essential commodities, especiallyfoodgrains, vegetables, fruits, edible oil, petrol and diesel. For yet another time potatoes ,tomatos and onions witnessed sharp escalation in their prices.Well the law and order, especially crime against women, did not register any improvement. There was no improvement in Indo-China and Indo-Pakistan relations despite the fact that Modi had started his innings on a positive note when he invited Pakistan Prime Minister,Nawaz Sharif and heads of other SAARC nations on the occasion of his swearing in ceremony. While intrusions and incursions by the Chinese troops continued in Ladakh,Pakistani Army resorted to repeated ceasefire violations for the purpose of pushing groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir. That agencies across Pakistan are keen to push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir for the purpose of escalating the level of violence which could wreck the ensuing Assembly elections is reflected in repeated ceasefire violations.Imagine first week of October 2014 registered as many as 17 ceasefire violations.
In the context of these developments one is still pessimistic about the BJP's victory in the Assembly election in Maharashtra, having 288 seats, and Haryana, which has 90 Assembly segments. Majority of people belonging to the middle and lower class continue to reel under price rise in essential commodities and major consumer items. There has been no remarkable progress in Indo-Pakistan ties.Yes there are indications on improving ties between India and China which is evident from the way Chinese troops withdrew from the position they had occupied in Ladakh. But as far as relations with Pakistan are concerned they continue to be under stress and strain because of ceasefire violations.Well, improving ties between India and the US and between India and Japan may give an edge to the BJP in the Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra..Both Haryana and Maharashtra have been under the Congress rule. What could have given some advantage to the BJP in Maharashtra is the split in the Congress-NC_ alliance. But snapping of ties between the BJP and the Shiv Sena could affect either the Shiv Sena's or BJP's fortune. As far as Haryana is concerned the BJP has decided to go alone. The Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra is likely to test Modi's political weight. If the BJP wins in these two states it will be easy for it to sail through in the states where Assembly poll is due by the end of this year or next year.
If not the BJP but Modi's political stature and strength are tied to the poll results in these two states. Keep India clean and several other schemes launched by the BJP led NDA Government may help the BJP to sail through in Maharashtra and Haryana.
