J&K floods: Omar demands special package but his Govt yet to furnish report on losses | | | JAMMU, Oct 8: While the Omar-led coalition government is demanding a special package against the devastation caused in the state by the recent floods, negligence on its part has jeopardized the release of funds by the Centre as it still awaits detailed report on the scale of losses and the amount needed for rehabilitation purpose. The central government, which sought a comprehensive report on the losses and the funds required to restore the damaged infrastructure, could not announce the special package as the state government has failed in its duty to submit the details of the losses suffered by it. Official sources said the Centre on its own cannot announce the package until and unless the state government lets it know about the damages and the estimated amount required to reconstruct the damaged infrastructure. The union Government has shot off two letters to state government in this regard but to no avail, the sources added. Sources said that the lame duck attitude of the state government has become a big hindrance for the grant of special package which could delay the rehabilitation process as after the onset of winters the reconstruction work in Kashmir Valley cannot be executed easily. "All the union ministries have already completed all the formalities for the grant of relief package but it could not be announced by the Centre since the rules first demands a detailed report of the damages and the estimates to go for any rehabilitation," sources said. "As soon as a report from the state government reaches New Delhi, a team of central officers will be sent to J&K to check the veracity of the report… Only then a relief package will be announced by the Centre," the sources added. |
