World Mental Health Day celebrated | | | Early Times Report RAJOURI, Oct 11: Block Medical Officer (BMO) Darhal today organised a function to celebrate world mental health day. Besides Civil Dignitaries, School Teachers, NGOs, Political and Social Leaders, a few mentally disabled persons from the area were also present in the function. Dr Iqbal gave a power point presentation and talked about various programmes launched by the health department especially by District Mental Health Programme (DMHP). "As per the World health report magnitude of the mental disorder is 10 to 15 % of the adult population. It indicate that 25% of the patient seeking primary health care have one or more mental disorder and one in four families have at least one member with mental disorder at any point of time" said Doctor Iqbal, BMO. He added that mental and neurological conditions account for 30.8% of all years lived with disability and depression is the major reason of the largest amount of disability (12%) and fourth leading cause of burden among all diseases. He further said that by 2020, it will rise to second leading cause of burden among all diseases. "Mentally ill people are always neglected due to supernatural beliefs, misconceptions, stigma and 90% of patients do not get medical help" said BMO and advised people to come and avail treatment of mental illness as it is curable disease. Pamphlets on mental illness were too distributed on this occasion. |
