Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 11: Notwithstanding breezy ceasefire violation on Saturday by the Pakistani forces the overall situation on the LOC and on the IB remained peaceful. If there were some ceasefire violations it was aimed at pushing about 1600 militants, trained in 36 camps, across the border into Jammu and Kashmir for hiking the level of violence.
For several days senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, felt infuriated over continued silence on the part of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, over repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops on the International Border (IB) in Jammu. Samajwadi Party Chief, Mulayama Singh Yadav, questioned the veracity of Modi's claim that he wore a 56 inches chest. He was heard telling people that during the election campaign Modi used to claim that since he had 56 inches chest China and Pakistan cannot do anything.
Where is that 56 inch wide chest ?Mulayama Singh asked while referring to the gun and mortar fire from the Pakistani troops on the IB. Some political activists mocked Modi telling people that he was wearing an infant size 5.6 inch wide chest thereby meaning that Modi had surrendered before the actual fight.
But these opposition leaders proved wrong. And a day before the Pakistani guns fell silent Modi roared like a lion during his pre-poll campaign in Maharashtra when he said the border will be calm as the Indian troops have mounted a major offensive against the Pakistani forces. He indirectly made it clear that Modi does not speak but the Indian guns do so. And the Indian guns succeeded in silencing the Pak gunners.
Politicians in India, whether belonging to the ruling party or to the opposition, have, over the years, relished reacting to trifles or to minor issues. Politicians in India remain in the forefront of those reacting against political upheaval in Mexico, or Hong Kong or Croatia without thinking about the fallout of such reactions. Against this the Chinese leaders invariably remain reticent. They react when the event or incident or any political development pinches the Chinese skin. That is the reason why the Chinese leaders do not trigger controversies. This is the reason that the Indian leaders invite criticism.
The Defence Minister, Arun Jaitley, made a cryptic but meaningful statement when he said "If Pakistan persists with this adventurism, our forces will make the cost of this adventurism unfordable for it.' The Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, directed the BSF to hit back with force and fury. Was it then necessary for Modi to say a word or two on the border conflict? Certainly not when he has reposed trust in his ministerial colleagues.
Others were critical of Modi on the plea that he had not assigned the portfolio of Defence to one Minister. Since Arun Jaitley had two major portfolios of Finance and Defence, critics of Modi thought that Jaitley may have not been able to look after the Defence properly. Giving Jaitley two major portfolios of Finance and Defence indicated that Modi has faith in the mental capacity of Jaitley.
Yes after nine days of heavy firing and mortar shelling from across the border, firing de-escalated along the 192-km long International Border in Jammu frontier on Friday with Pakistan opened fire on four borders out posts in Kathua district. There was no firing along the IB in Jammu and Samba districts.
"There was no cross-border firing during the intervening night of October 9 and 10 along the International Border in Jammu and Samba districts", BSF spokesman has said.
However, there was firing by Pakistan along IB in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district for 20 minutes from 8 am to 8.20 am involving four BSF BoPs, the spokesman said.
There was no loss of life or damage. The IB has witnessed heavy firing for 9 days that has left eight persons dead and injured nearly 90 people, including 13 securitymen. And over 32,000 people have fled from their border homes leaving 113 hamlets deserted along the IB.
India and Pakistan troops traded heavy fire along the IB on the intervening night of October 7 and 8 after Pakistan Rangers shelled almost the entire IB by targeting 60 Border Out Posts (BoPs) and over 130 border hamlets in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir, in which 15 people, including 3 BSF jawans were injured.
There has been over three dozen ceasefire violations along IB since October 1. On October 8, two women of a family were killed and 15 others injured in heavy mortar shelling and firing by Pakistani troops along the IB.
Inside reports said that three factors are said to have forced Pakistani troops to call a halt to its adventurism. First, threat of counter offensive by India altered the Pakistan's stance on the border conflict. Reports had reached Islamabad that the Indian troops planned to open a new front in the western sector to hit hard the Pakistani forces Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif,is said to have asked the top Army brass to stop ceasefire violations. Secondly, the extent of damage caused in Pakistan border belts by the Indian retaliatory fire, which kicked up protest demonstrations, also motivated the Pakistani forces to stop targeting Indian border outposts and villages. Thirdly, political pressure was mounted on Nawaz Sharif by the UN General Secretary, Ban-ki-Moon, Washington, Beijing and the UK telling him in plain terms that firing on Indian border outposts and villages should be stopped.
People have heaved a sigh of relief. But they believe that Pakistani troops may commit the mischief again. In support of their contention they refer to series of ceasefire violations on the IB since 2003.
