NC dreads conduct of elections in December
10/11/2014 10:41:18 PM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 11: Even as the Election Commission of India is yet to take a final call on the timing of the general Assembly elections in J&K, the ruling National Conference is quite disturbed by the reports of elections to be held in December this year.
Sources told Early Times that the issue was even discussed in the Cabinet meeting the other day and it was evident from the body language of the NC leaders that they were disturbed on reports of elections to be held in December this month. Sources said that Chief Minister; Omar Abdullah has privately said on Friday that it will be disastrous for his party if elections are held later this year.
Omar has reportedly said that he cannot face the people of Srinagar this time as the devastating floods have wreak havoc and nothing has been done so far in rehabilitating them. Sources said that Omar was disturbed over the reports about elections to be held in December.
It merits a mention here that NC had recently urged upon the EC to defer the elections till April 2015. Sources said that NC is desperately seeking deferment of elections by at least five months in a bid to regain some space in electoral politics. Sources, however, said that the ruling party is also analysing whether the opposition PDP was also on public scanner for the fact that the party also failed to show its presence on ground during the devastating floods. Some people are of the opinion that there is resentment against PDP also because the party could not come up to the expectations of the people during floods.
Senior NC leader and Minister for Law, Mir Saifullah said ET today that if there was anger against NC in Srinagar, it was against PDP in south Kashmir because that party was completely missing on ground during floods.
He said NC was ready to face the elections even if these are held later this year. He said Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's efforts during the floods were appreciated by all. He said that NC still enjoys the support of the majority of the people and it will form the next Government on its own.
Though, both have different languages, cultures, but this festival has brought them closer.
