Fearing defeat Omar shying away from elections | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 11: Fearing defeat, Omar Abdullah wants deferment of elections. The party has, true to its political DNA, has criticized the PDP for giving its consent on the elections. National Conference is the only party which has told the Election Commission that elections shouldn't be held this time. The party has given strange logic that elections could affect the relief operations. The excuse is reflection of desperation and contradic-tions in the party. The relief operation is being handled by the officials and all of them are not called for the election duties. The elections are conducted mainly by few officials with maximum strength being provided by the teachers, who are required for electoral lists and posted at polling stations. The teachers don't have any role in the relief operation as it's mainly the job of Revenue and Relief department, which ironically was itself missing when it was needed the most. The second and that seem the only 'logic' is that if elections are announced then Omar will lose all the political powers and so will his NC colleague. This will take away any chances of the tweaking the rules and giving political patronage for the political gains. The NC Ministers had now got strained relations with the bureaucracy. Its Minister had a spat with an upright IAS officer. A recent article by a bureaucrat exposing the Omar Government in its handling of the situation has put the bureaucracy totally at odds with the NC Ministers and this is the least Omar expected or wanted. Now by wanting an extension of his Government, the Omar Abdullah wants to put in place at important postings his favourite officials who will go by the diktats of their masters with plan to go slow on operations represented by the opposition thus evoking unrest of the public against the elected representatives "The game plan of the Omar has been exposed. He is now trying to enjoy the perks of being a CM, the only thing he did as a CM in the six years," said an official. |
