Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 11 : Majority of floods and landslides affected people have conveyed to the Election Commission of India that it should emulate the State Cabinet's decision on postponing the annual examination in the Kashmir valley and in the winter zones of the region of Jammu and should postpone poll .
Majority of flood victims and those displaced from their villages on the IB owing to mortar and gun fire from the Pakistani troops have appealed to the Chief Election Commission (ECI) and the Government of India to postpone the Assembly election in view of the enormous difficulties being faced by the majority of people.
Rakesh Kumar is among several villagers from Arnia who say that they may not be able to return early to their ancestral villages because "we cannot trust" Pakistani troops.
The Pak troops, they said, could reopen fire on "our" villages and the border outposts. And such situation shall become odd in polls and the examination as well, so I welcome state's decision to postpone examinations and wish ECI shall do to the same. Gowhar Ahmed of Srinagar said that the Commission and the Government of India should not take any hasty decision on holding the election by the middle of this year.
He said that when the election process was suspended in Jammu and Kashmir for about seven years because of high pitched incidents of militancy related violence why cannot the Assembly election be postpone for a few months ? Those affected by floods have appreciated the state Government's decision to postpone the annual examination adding that the postponement of the examinations was warranted because of the devastation caused by floods.
"When the examination can be postponed why cannot the poll process be deferred?" asked Gowhar Ahmed like others in Rajbagh and Jawahar Nagar whose houses have been razed to the ground by floods.
These flood affected people said, "We are engaged in rehabilitation and restoration of damaged infrastructure and hence we do not have neither the time nor the mood to participate in the pre-poll campaign. Reports said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah may submit another request to the Election Commission on India (ECI) for postponing the Assembly poll till the rehabilitation and restoration of damaged infrastructure was partially completed.
