JAMMU, Oct 11: The Karwa Chouth festival which is being celebrated all over North India has its own significance among the Hindu women and in the state of Jammu and Kashmir; it is being celebrated by all communities including Punjabi, Dogra and Hindu Kashmiri women.
The festival is being celebrated by Kashmiri Pandit women mostly after migration from valley. Though not all Pandit women observed fast and celebrate Karwa Chouth, but the young women and inter- caste marriages made the festival popular.
Many Pandit women who observed fast on Karwa Chouth interacted looked upbeat. Rita Bhat, said that she is celebrating this festival since 1992 and now everyone in our family celebrates karwa chouth and also observes fast.
She further added that her son married to a Punjabi girl added one more member to observe fast. Now we are all observing fast and do every ritual which is associated with this festival. Another woman, Sonia koul, who is celebrating karwa chouth from last five years said that her friend who is a Dogra developed an interest towards this as I used to go often to his home on karwa chouth and now I and my family is happily celebrating this important festival, though most Kashmiri women don't participate in this, but the trend is changing now. Our community is adapting other things also and after migration, we equally participate in all the festivals including karwa chouth. Another women, who not only observed fast on karwa chouth, but also participate in navratras said that Kashmiri women after migration from Kashmir have adapted various traditions which otherwise were alien to them.
The time has changed and inter caste marriages have helped both communities in understanding each other's festivals.
Though, both have different languages, cultures, but this festival has brought them closer.
