Facebook Addiction
Dr. Pragya Khanna10/12/2014 9:50:01 PM

Social networking websites
have become very popular and
are currently being used regularly my millions of people worldwide.
Available not only on your computer but also through most mobile devices like Smart phones and I-Phones, Facebook and other such sites like MySpace, Friendster, Classmates, Orkut, LinkedIn help strangers connect with others based on shared personal interests, political and economic views, or simply recreational activities. The advantages of these sites are manifold, since social networking is done over the web; you get to meet individuals from your city, neighboring cities, far off places, different countries and learn about their culture. How many people in your social circle had friends across the Atlantic or the Pacific earlier? Now that web based social networking is there people can have friends/pals from all across the globe, given that they share something in common, and communicate with that person regularly similar to hooking up with friends after work or school. The best part about becoming a member of a social network is that majority of these are free. This means that you don't have to pay any fees. But as it is all good things in life come at a price.
Social networking is quite addictive. Once you get started you find yourself reading through it everyday if not more. People become quickly hooked on reading all of their friend's updated status messages while trying to come up with interesting ones to post for themselves. Everyday Facebook suggests 'people you may know' as possible friends to connect with as you spend hours going through the list looking for old high school friends or former sweethearts from past romances. Then there are all the pictures. You upload pictures of yourself, your family, your kids, your dog, your car, etc. almost every day. Then you spend time adding amusing metaphors to the pictures and tag all the faces of your friends all while deciding which picture should be your default picture for today. You also spend hours looking at all of your friends' pictures as well, leaving cool and interesting comments for them and others to read.
One of the most addictive things on Facebook is the availability of games that are available. From bowling against your friends to starting your own gang; there are literally hundreds of game applications for your Facebook account. People find themselves spending hours upon hours playing games against their friends instead of doing work or spending time with family.
However, the most negative impact of Facebook and other such sites is how accessible they make you. Once you have signed up for a Facebook account you have made yourself completely exposed to the world. Anyone who wants to find out anything about you will be able to find it on Facebook. If you have people who are trying to find you, or people in your life who want to track you or bully you, they have an easy access to do it through Facebook. Many students have been blaming various social networking sites for their steady decrease in grades. A research conducted in United States over several children proved that students who use such sites excessively have a low attention span and thus score low grades and has proved that such youngsters lack the ability to communicate or concentrate away from their screens. Excessive networking leads to a huge loss of productivity and wasted time, which is a high price to pay for no self-control.
The effect of these sites is very overwhelming in the beginning as one receives uncountable requests for friendship one after the other, all confirming that you are somebody. But as time passes, the requests become fewer and fewer. A time comes when there are none of these and for many people young and mature this is the time when feelings of insecurity, anxiety and apprehension rush over. Does anyone like me? Did I say the right thing? Will they be my friend? Etc.
You might disagree but Facebook is depriving you of society and social bonding. Social Networking is ironical in its name because it doesn't bring people closer but creates big gaps in relationships with people who really matter the most in our life Parents and Family. People must understand Facebook is not the right place to seek new friends that could be there for you when you need them, yes it develops connection but not the one which we need, therefore communication with real people who live in your locality, study at coaching and work with you is much more important. In modern life, the appeal of social networking sites to children is easy to understand. As many parents now consider playing outside too dangerous, a child confined to the home can find at the keyboard the kind of freedom of interaction that earlier generations took for granted in the three-dimensional world of the street.
Moreover, social networking sites satisfy that basic human need to belong, as well as the ability to experience instant feedback and recognition from someone, somewhere, 24 hours a day. However, think it over, real-life chatting is, after all, far more perilous than in the cyber world as it occurs in real time, with no opportunity to think up clever responses, and it requires a sensitivity to voice tone, body language and even to physical chemicals such as pheromones. Its overuse thus hampers the overall personality and brain development.
Social networking of course helps in a lot of ways but the users have to be really careful to stay secure and safe. This is essential because the social networking sites let you to display your personal information such as name, location, and email address.
Cyber-bullying and harassment are most often carried out by other teens and tend to happen most to older girls and to teens of either gender who have a strong online presence. It may take several forms like exposing private instant messages, text messages or e-mails, posting threatening messages, posting photos that cause embarrassment, humiliation, spreading gossips, etc.
Social networking sites are great for building customer relationship. There is information about new products, special offers, or others that encourage purchase, your customers can react soon and take actions. Social networking sites can sell your personal information to anyone who wants to buy it, including spammers and on line predators. Even if the terms of understanding claim that no personal information will be sold, the site can change its policy at any time. Hence, many such business and other groups keep sending unwanted mail to you that can be annoying. Hence, while coming with volumes of information, fun and excitement, it has its share of disadvantages. For parents of younger teens, it is important that they investigate any sites kids like to use. Find out what privacy protections are in place and insist that your teen uses them. For children under 16, that often means a private profile that can only be seen by approved friends. Support your kids to tell you if they're victims of cyber bullying or harassment. Many teens will try to deal with this on their own, which can have unfortunate consequences. If your child knows who's behind the harassment, involve the other child's parents or school officials. If it is anonymous, help your child from feeling traumatized. A lot of experts say that social networking is here to stay so we have to take advantage of it. When you do join a social networking site, keep an open eye and see if this is exactly what you wanted. If not, cancel your account until you find the one that you like.
Happy Networking!
