Srinagar, Oct24; Amid rumors of enforcement of Model Code of Conduct by the Election Commission of India anytime, the Civil Secretariat was flooded by the visitors today including casual labours and daily wagers of various departments. Around 10,000 people particularly the daily wagers and casual laboures of various departments swamped into the civil secretariat today as the rumors were rife about the enforcement of MCC by the ECI anytime by now. Ministers and MLAs of the NC-Congress coalition government could also be seen busy in working out modalities for engagement and regularization of casual labours before the ECI imposes Model Code of Conduct in the state ahead of the assembly elections scheduled later this year.
MLAs and MLCs of ruling National Conference could be seen on their toes in pushing for engagement of their favourites as casual laboures and daily wagers in various departments. Nasir Aslam Wani, Peer Afaq, Shameema Firdous, Irfan Ahmad Shah, Abdul Majid Bhat (MLC), Shawkat Ahmad (MLC) were hectically lobbying for engagement of their workers.
On the other hand hundreds of already working casual laboures and daily wagers were seen pursuing the proposal for their regularization. Meanwhile anti-Government slogans reverberated inside Civil Secretariat after daily-wagers resorted to sloganeering outside Higher Education Ministers cabin. The daily-wagers alleged that Higher Education Minister Muhammad Akbar Lone not only misbehaved with them but also told them categorically that he will not allow Government to accord sanction for their regularization till his own men are not put in list. Eyewitnesses said that scores of daily wagers had arrived in Civil Secretariat Srinagar on Friday as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was scheduled to preside a meeting of Ministers in which the decision about the regularization of daily wagers was to given a final touch. However, reports said that except, Chief Minister and few odd Ministers, most of them were absent and could not attend the meeting; as a result the meeting could not take place. Annoyed by the government decision not to hold meeting, the daily wagers entered into the cabin of Higher Education Minister Muhammad Akbar Lone to esquire about their fate.Pertinently, the government had hinted that it is all set to regularize the services of around 40,000 daily-wagers working in different departments. State government had asked the various departments to submit the information of the daily-wagers till June 30. The state finance department had cleared 56213 cases against the total number of 59594 cases, they added.
