Srinagar, Nov 7: In the name of Darbar move Estates department (ED) is earning huge amount of money from hoteliers as the accommodation for move employees is proving to be an enormous burden on state exchequer. Crores spent annually on the accommodation of these employees is being misused by the top government officials in the department, official source disclosed.
One of the top senior officials of the civil secretariat while talking to Early Times alleged that Estate Department is blatantly allowing gross loot and plunder of huge money in providing accommodation to employees in the hired private hotels. "Around 2000 government employees working with move offices of civil secretariat are being adjusted in at least 100 private hotels hired by the Estates department in the winter capital of the state. They pay at least Rs 12500 for one room to the hired hoteliers per month, and also the hired hotels providing to move employees are substandard rooms," he said.
He claims that the better accommodation at much cheaper cost is readily available and that the government should end this system of accommodation and should instead provide them Rs 6,000 per month so that they can arrange suitable rooms. Wishing anonymity, another move employee highly placed in Assembly secretariat questioned the rationale of paying Rs 12, 500 per month per room to hoteliers.
"Public money is being wasted and there is no accountability in the said government as nothing can justify hiring such rooms except vested interests of some officers in the Estates department," he added.
"We are being treated inhumanly," said another move employee. "I appeal the government that it would be better if it will release only Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 per month to each employee so that they can hire better rooms on rent in the city having all facilities up to the mark," another move employee said.
"We always face many problems regarding electricity, water supply fitting etc. Many times we registered compliant against this pathetic condition but no action has been taken to redress our complaints so far," one of the employee posted in Speakers office told Early Times. According to source there is complete nexus between Estate Department and Hoteliers in which higher officials of Eestate Department earns huge commission from hoteliers, "Several times, we have appealed the government not to spend huge amounts on the accommodation, but authorities never considered our suggestions and instead are continuously spending crores of rupees for their personal interests," sources said. Meanwhile, sources said in most of the hotels which were hired by the government for employees (mainly from Secretariat), the rooms have gradually been allotted to PSOs and PROs attached with either bureaucrats or ministers.Sources said the employees desperate on many fronts for want of proper lodging feel their right to privacy is being violated by forcing them to share lodging in the hotels where they find new incumbents every new season.
Despite repeated attempts, no contact could be made with Director Estate.
