JU men, PU Patiala women emerge champions | North Zone Inter-University Handball | |

JAMMU, Nov 13: Hosts University of Jammu (JU) men and Punjabi University (PU) Patiala lifted the championship trophies after they topped the points tally in the league round of the North Zone Inter-University Handball Championship concluded on the campus grounds, here today. The JU men team secured five points after they held PU Patiala to a draw in the last league tie played this morning. With four points, PU Patiala remained second while Punjab University Chandigarh remained third securing three points. The JU team was coached by Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach, Dev Raj while Deputy Registrar, JU, Dr Dharminder Magotra was manager. Similarly, in women's section, Punjabi University Patiala won all their league engagements to obtain highest six points thus claimed the title trophy. Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara remained runners-up with four points while Punjab University Chandigarh had to contain with third position earning two points. In the valedictory function, former Vice Chancellor of JU, Prof MPS Ishar was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes. Prof Ishar as also his wife, Lida Singh felicitated by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education for their contribution in developing sports infrastructure on the campus. Speaking to the gathering, Prof Singh hoped that JU would continue to excel at the national level with improved sports infrastructure on the camps. He told the gathering that sports was no more a medium to keep one physically fit, but it has become a profession. In his address, Vice Chancellor, JU, Prof R D Sharma assured all possible help in promoting sports on the campus. He complemented the Directorate of Sports for hosting two back to back North Zone competitions on the campus. Prominent among those present were Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Kiran Wattal and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Handball Federation of India, S M Bali. A host of JU officers were also among the distinguished gathering. Earlier, Prof. Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau welcomed the distinguished gathering and presented a detailed report of the event. |
