After SC judgment, NC left bereft of issues

srinagar, Oct 6: The Supreme Court order over the beef ban controversy has left opposition National Conference, which was all set to score political points, bereft of issues.
As the matter is now under judicial consideration and therefore prohibited from public discussion elsewhere, the NC all of a sudden witnesses itself caught in the middle of crises.
It had earlier announced its intentions in the Assembly wherein it was all set to corner the PDP-BJP coalition Government.
"But by taking the beef ban issue to the Supreme Court, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has made NC to eat a humble pie," said a PDP leader, adding that NC president Omar Abdullah's frustration was evident on Monday.
Omar had on Monday said that to save his Government, Mufti was disempowering Legislature. "National Conference had moved an adjournment motion not to seek debate on beef issue but to get answers from the Government as to why the issue was taken to the Supreme Court. We wanted to know from the Government when State Legislature is fully empowered to discuss the issues like beef ban, why the issue was taken to the apex court. I believe Chief Minister deliberately did it to save his chair and the Government," he said.
Omar said that Mufti and his partners in the coalition cited the beef issue as sub-judice in a bid to bury beef ban bills.
A senior NC leader told Early Times that the SC judgement has come as a shocker for the party as it had expected a huge ruckus in the Assembly during the autumn session.
"We were hoping that the issue of beef ban could be raised in the House. There are aspirations of people associated with the issue and we were set to raise it with all out pitch," he said.
It now becomes evident why the NC all of a sudden has decided to boycott the entire session. There was no issue left which the party would have agitated on in the House.
"As the beef ban issue is before the Supreme Court, the NC leaders all of a sudden started raising Article 35-A. It was a non- issue indeed and by their unruly behaviour, NC wanted its members to get suspended so that it could get a reason to distance itself from the routine business," said a party insider.
Notably, Mufti's close aide and Education Minister Naeem Akhter Andrabi had termed the SC judgement a breather for the Government.
