Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 31: The Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir has turned into a "non-entity" as all the attempts of the party to make a comeback have proved futile.
Sources told Early Times that soon after the former Chief Minister and PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed passed away, state Congress leaders tried their best to develop cordial relations with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and sent many feelers to its leadership to say goodbye to BJP and revive its alliance with the Congress.
"Congress leaders got it conveyed to PDP that it need not worry about the independent MLAs as it would ensure that they support the new coalition in Jammu and Kashmir," sources claimed.
They said despite Congress trying its best to lure the PDP it got a "cold response" from the later sending most of the party leaders into tizzy.
The Congress, which has got 12 seats in the 87-member Assembly, faced a humiliating defeat in the 2014 Assembly polls and it had to bite the dust after sharing the power in JK for 12 consecutive years. "Congress party tried its best once again to strike a deal with PDP and come to power in JK but all its moves and gestures failed to impress its old coalition ally" said a source.
Insiders claimed that PDP's cold response has led to Congress leaders raising hue and cry about no democratic government being in place in Jammu and Kashmir. "Congress leaders are giving vent to their ire as PDP leaders have made it clear to them that they should stop day dreaming with 12 seats in their kitty," said a source.
He said, "One of the PDP leaders made it clear to Congress that party cannot take the risk of forming the government whose fate would depend upon the support of independent MLAs."
" Jammu and Kashmir needs a stable government and numbers matter," one of the PDP leaders is understood to have told a Congress leader.
A senior Congress leader while talking to Early Times said, "If PDP decides to call for midterm polls at this point of time these can prove counterproductive for the PDP as it has not been able to keep any of the promises which it had made to people during the past ten months."
The leader claimed that PDP is trying to "buy time" and is staging a drama. "PDP has already struck a deal with BJP to form the government. PDP has taken a tough stand just to hoodwink the people. The party is trying to address its constituency in Kashmir where it has become unpopular after joining hands with BJP," the leader claimed.
Sources within the Congress revealed that party leaders were divided over offering any support to PDP. "The group which has been opposing any tie-up with PDP from the day one are mocking at the party leaders who had approached the PDP to form the government. The differences of opinion within the state unit of the Congress party have turned the party into a Circus as everyone believes that they are big leaders with tall stature," the source claimed.
