Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 13: Despite the fact that unabated power theft is regular feature across the state, the Power Development Department has miserably failed to curb the menace due to rampant corruption in the department.
Sources told Early Times that at Sai Shyam Colony, Ghou Manhasan, the extent of the brazen power theft can be gauged from the fact that over fifty illegal connections in the area are running day and night with active connivance of PDD employees who are greased their palms by these illegal consumers and whenever efforts are made to apply for getting legal connection for electric supply, such consumers are discouraged by the local employees of the Department obviously for their vested interest.
Surprisingly there are only 2-3 odd active legal consumers in the colony where electric meters are installed and pay regular monthly bills and due to overloading, the transformer got damaged thrice in last two months, they informed.
"The colony has been reeling under darkness since March 31, 2016 and the Power Development department is just sleeping over the matter and no step is being taken by the Department to put a lid on tapping of power meant for legal consumers so brazenly so that frequency of damages to distribution transformer of 100 KVA capacity of the locality is drastically curtailed which has become a regular affair just at the onset of summer," they said.
They further said that Power Development Department has literally closed its eyes towards this menace of illegal power tapping so much so that genuine/ legal consumers are suffering the most who are regularly paying bill and their lives have been thrown out of gear.
To set the record straight, due to these illegal connections putting heavy burden on the transformer meant to cater to specified electric load , due to this reason , distribution transformer got damaged every now and then putting the genuine consumers into inconvenience.
"Law enforcement by the PDD is not being implemented in true letter and spirit as a regular feature with audit of sanctioned loads by the consumers of the area is totally ignored by the Department with the result revenue generating source of government is hit badly due to complicity of the departmental employees in looting the government exchequer in connivance with illegal consumers.
When contacted Executive Engineer (EM&RE-III) Sanjay Sharma in this regard, he said that strict action will be taken against the illegal consumers by sending an inspecting team. As far as the restoration of damaged transformer is concerned, it will be installed in next two days.
"Actually, the damaged transformer is of 6.6 KV Capacity which is generally not available with the department and had to get repaired and will be installed in two days," he assured.
On being asked whether the area would be covered under Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP), he said that the programme is meant for only municipal areas.
