Delhi electorate again rejects BJP
5/18/2016 11:16:14 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 18: 15 months ago, the BJP suffered a humiliating defeat in the Delhi assembly elections. It was AamAadmi Party (AAP) of Arvind Kejriwal, which sprung a big surprise by capturing 67 out of 70 assembly seats. The BJP, which in the previous assembly had 32 seats, could win only three seats, despite the fact that PM Modi addressed nine election rallies and almost all the Union Ministers, BJP MP, and BJP-RSS cadres from across the nation worked day and night to ensure the victory of the BJP.
The Congress, which had ruled Delhi for 15 long years without a break, failed to open its account.
On May 15, electorate of Delhi again went to the polls to elect 13 members to the Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD). The results were declared on Tuesday. Tuesday turned out to be another waterloo for the BJP in the sense that it could win only three wards. Earlier, it represented eight of the 13 wards in the MCD. It was a humiliating defeat of the BJP and its defeat also pointed out that the BJP's popularity has declined and the PM Modi has failed to win over the people despite he being in power for almost two years now.
The AAP, on the other hand, won five seats and the Congress captured four and the remaining one seat went to an independent candidate, who joined the Congress immediately after the results were announced. The AAP also suffered a defeat in the real sense of the term as it has been in power in Delhi since February 2015. In other words, the Delhi electorate also expressed no confidence in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his policies.
The Congress surprisingly was the real gainer as it didn't represent any of these 13 wards in the MCD.
The BJP leadership admitted that the election results were disappointing for their party and that they will introspect to find where the party and its election managers went wrong. It is difficult to say that the BJP leadership will learn any lesson from the defeat. For, power has gone into its head.
In Jammu province, things are also not inspiring for the BJP and this fact is acknowledged by all those who matter in the party. They say "the party would perform poorly in the impending local bodies' and panchayat elections". "The party doesn't want elections, but it has no other option left as the J&K High Court has directed the state government to hold elections in the next six months," say many insiders, adding that the "party leadership has destroyed the party in the state and that it's all over for the party in the state".
"The BJP in J&K will meet the fate the BJP met in Delhi and states like Tamil Nadu, west Bengal, Kerala and Puducherry," they predict, adding "they have nothing in their kitty to offer to the people of the state in general and Jammu province in particular and it is the BJP ministers and party high command who have caused an irreparable damage to the party by putting all the eggs in the Kashmiri basket".
What they say appears to be correct. The general view in Jammu province is that the BJP will be wiped out as and when elections are held. Those who believe that the BJP leadership would refashion its whole approach towards the Jammu electorate are only living in a fool's paradise. That it is treading a dangerous path could be seen from what it said on Tuesday in Srinagar. A senior BJP minister said that the state government will facilitate talks between New Delhi and separatists and that the state government will implement agenda of alliance in a definite timeframe.
