Jammu, May 18: Hundreds of students aspiring for seats in MBBS and BDS courses and their parents have been taken aback by the conceit of the Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) which hoodwinked the judgment of the Apex court of the land and conducted the JKCET (Jammu and Kashmir combined entrance examination) without issuing the amended notification for exclusion of MBBS and BDS course from its ambit.
This unwarranted act of the BOPEE has threatened the careers of hundreds of such MBBS and BDS aspirants who did not appear in the JKCET in the light of directions of the Supreme Court.
In a landmark judgment by Supreme Court, medical entrances were streamlined by ordering to conduct a single entrance gateway (NEET) for MBBS & BDS, whereby all private medical colleges, deemed universities, minority institutions and states were barred from holding their own separate entrance examinations.
All private medical colleges complied with the order and issued notifications of cancelling their separate entrance exams and many states like Punjab, Assam and Rajasthan also agreed to be part of NEET as ordered by Supreme Court.
Those states who had a common entrance test for engineering, BAMS, BUMS, MBBS & BDS also issued notification that exams will be only for engineering, BAMS, BUMS etc and not for MBBS & BDS.
Education Minister Naeem Akhtar also issued a press statement clarifying that J&K will also be part of NEET, implying that MBBS & BDS admission will be through NEET; but astoundingly, Board of Professional Entrance Examination conducted the JKCET without any notification about exclusion of MBBS & BDS aspirants. This has created an atmosphere of doubt among 5000 odd students of medical stream who did not appear in the JKCET taking Supreme Court order as final decision. BOPEE is also issuing conflicting statements about the future of the test. This is creating lot of stress among the students who have been kept in lurch just because of egoist attitude of few officials.
In a meeting of parents of medical aspirants, a strong anguish & resentment was shown against the BOPEE's indifferent attitude. "This is nothing short of the contempt of the supreme court as the JKCET was held without issuing any amended notification" said parent alleging ulterior motives of BOPEE chairman. Parents appealed to the Government to order BOPEE to issue a notification regarding exclusion of MBBS & BDS at the earliest. They also warned to start an agitation if BOPEE did not come clean on the sensitive issue that had direct bearing on the future of the students at the earliest.
